In addition to managed therapy rooms on the Wirral and Liverpool I also work from a beautiful loft room in my Edwardian house in New Brighton.

When I first viewed the house I was captivated by the courtyard at the rear, and the history of the house, however having viewed it several times online I was really keen to see the loft.  I wasn't disappointed, from the moment I stepped into this beautiful space it was love.  I walked around the room and stared at the views of the Lighthouse.  I didn't want to leave, I knew I could put my stamp on this house. I love interior design and resorting properties has long been a passion of mine.

It is safe to say I bought the house for the loft!

I knew it would inspire me to write and relax, clients always comment on what a beautiful space it is for therapy.

We all have lofty ideas and ambitions throughout our life, I love to work with people on helping them find their highest and truest self.... from my loft come the lessons.  I hope you find interesting ideas here to inspire you.

A Safe Harbour

A Safe Harbour

On a recent trip to the beautiful seaside town of Whitby I was captivated by this view of the harbour. I literally couldn't take my eyes off it. Standing up on the cliff side, I had this fantastic view of the North Sea stretching for endless miles and the harbour with its huge ancient ‘arms’ welcoming in the little fishing boats.

I live at the edge of Liverpool Bay, I see on a daily basis how powerful the sea is. As I stood on that cliff in Whitby, I imagined being in a tiny boat, being tossed on the waves, and being desperate to get back into the harbour. The saying ‘a safe harbour’ brought on a new meaning for me, it also got me thinking. What is my ‘safe harbour’?

I came to the conclusion that there are physical and emotional ‘safe harbour’s’. Here are mine; perhaps it is obvious but my physical harbour, is my home. I never want to be away for long stretches of time, it may appeal to me to travel for months, but in reality, I know myself too well. I would yearn for my bed, my kitchen, my garden, and yes, my ‘things’. I am a home bird for sure. I have been known to return from a trip and say out loud the minute my feet are over the doorstep, ‘hello house, I am back!’

Crazy? Not really, my home is my harbour.

Another physical harbour for me is the city I grew up in. A Scouser born and bred, my sense of place and belonging are always nurtured when I am in the city surrounded by other Scousers. Liverpool will always be a harbour for me.

Like many people my emotional harbour is my family. The harbour looks like this, there is a roast dinner in the oven, the fridge is full of beer, cake, and snacks, my family fill the house with laughter, and noise. Invariably there is football to be watched. When we are all together, I feel that loving harbour, as keenly as if they were the two huge stone arms of Whitby Bay.

Friendships are another emotional harbour, they provide me with a safe harbour and an anchor. My many friendships spanning the years help to create that safe space for me to be truly at ease with myself and know that I am accepted for who I am.

As I write this, I am struck by the common themes, in my ‘safe harbour’, a sense of place, a sense of belonging, history, continuity, acceptance and love.

If we are feeling like life is throwing us about like a little boat on a cruel sea, we will desperately want to be inside the stone arms of a safe harbour.

Do you have a safe harbour? If not, how can you create one for yourself? One that is there for you, regardless of how high the waves, or fierce the wind, you can always come out of the storm.  Out of the storm and into the stone arms of the harbour you have created for yourself.

Tell me what represents your safe harbour, and if you would like to develop one then perhaps it would be good to talk. When would you like to begin?
